Orland Park Public Library Receives Secretary of State Live & Learn Grant

Jun. 21, 2016
Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has announced the Orland Park Public Library is a recipient of the FY 2016 Secretary of State Live & Learn Grant for Construction. As a winner of the grant, the library will be awarded $51,006 for the replacement of worn carpet tiles with a more sustainable flooring. This needed capital improvement is set to be completed in the year to come.
“This replacement is so essential for our senior population, people with disabilities, parents with strollers, and all who come to the library for education, recreation, and solitude,” said Library Director Mary Weimar. “Safety and ease of access are paramount in the library’s concerns.”
The Orland Park Public Library is visited over 434,000 times a year making the flooring very heavily trafficked. The library plans to replace approximately 6,000 square feet of the carpet that is original to the opening of the library building in 2006.
“The library understands this renovation project may impact patron access during certain portions of the project, but the library will make all efforts to continue to provide services,” Weimar said.
The Secretary of State Live & Learn Grant for Construction is awarded to a public library (or libraries) that is/are a full member of the Illinois Library System and permits reciprocal borrowing, meets the eligibility for Per Capita Grants, and has been awarded a Per Capita Grant for the three previous fiscal years.
Live & Learn Grants were awarded in the total amount of $701,386 in the fiscal year of 2015. New Construction/Remodeling grants were awarded in five cases. Four grants were accessibility grants, and eight Mini-Grants were awarded. Some of the previous winners include Homer Community Public Library, Ashley Public Library District, and Kewanee Public Library District.
